1930’s Drape and Drama: The Lisette Dress by Miss Candyfloss

I’m part of a group on Facebook (The Sugar Shack Boutique, if you want to join) that does group buys from various vintage inspired clothing sellers. I’ve had my eye on Miss Candyfloss as a brand for awhile, but couldn’t quite get up the nerve to try order vintage reproduction clothes from Sweden without knowing more about the sizing. I was thrilled when this brand came up as part of the group buy, which made this dress far less of a risk.

Miss Candyfloss is a really interesting vintage inspired brand, partially because of the way they combine various eras to make dresses that feel super authentic but still wearable for regular people. This dress is a great example of that. While it’s listed as a 1940’s era style dress on the website, the gorgeous bishop sleeves are right out of the golden era of Hollywood in the 1930’s. I’m wearing a 2x in this, which means that the Miss Candyfloss sizing runs smaller than Pinup Girl Clothing (I’m an XL) or Trashy Diva (I’m a 14). If I had to compare it to another brand, I think Tatyana is the closest.

In this case, the sizing is perfect. One size up would be too loose but I don’t think I could have gotten into one size down. I was fairly nervous about ordering this as it’s basically a wiggle dress, which is a style I haven’t worn in years. That said, this dress has great lines and is super slimming! It doesn’t cling to areas I don’t love as much (Hi, all those scones I ate last weekend!) but is also cut with enough curve that it fits like a glove. The ruching in the bust area is really well done and helps create a great shape as well.

As you can see, the sleeves on this dress are extremely authentic and come with a serious dose of drama. I love that Miss Candyfloss didn’t skimp on material here and that the sleeves drape so nicely.

There’s  a nice three button detail on the cuff as well that helps the sleeves maintain their shape.

Since I was new to this brand, I honestly didn’t know what the quality would be like. The dress is made from a nice fabric with just a bit of stretch. The website describes it as medium weight, but it’s definitely winter weight for New Orleans. I suspect I will be waiting for it to get a bit cooler here before I wear this dress out, but it will be great for autumn if you don’t live in a sub-tropical climate.  The best feature seems to be that this fabric does not wrinkle, which would make it great for traveling. This feels more fabric authentic than lots of brands do (like Tatyana or occasionally even Pinup Girl Clothing) but also allows the dress to be machine washable.

I really love this dress and will definitely be a repeat Miss Candyfloss customer. Their prices are lower than many of the US based repro brands while the quality is higher – this dress feels like a great deal at $123. If you want to pick up your own, it’s here and also comes in red.

Ooohh, what a sophisticated, gorgeous colour and silhouette for this great dress. I’m in love with the sleeves, too, and wish more repro frocks would have nice, roomy sleeves like that, too.

Wishing you a great start of November, stylish lady!

Such a great dress! I love the shape. 1930’s style would have been my guess too! I love it on Holly and love the color!
