For A Sexy New Year’s Eve Outfit, Never Underestimate the Vintage Sweater Set.

This sweater set is the perfect illustration of how sometimes the best vintage comes from vintage buddies who are a slightly different size than you. I acquired this from a friend who has similar measurements and tastes, but has a long torso and is tall. I have pretty much no torso and am short, so we swapped a bunch of stuff and I ended up with two amazing beaded sweater sets as a result.

Beaded sweater sets seem to be one of those vintage items that aren’t as coveted. However, when you run into someone who loves them, they tend to be a fanatic. I definitely fall into that category. I love knit sweater sets and dresses, but especially if they have amazing beadwork. I bought out almost all of Trashy Diva’s reproduction vintage knit line several years ago and pick up all the vintage ones I can on the extremely rare occasion I run across one that works for me.

I love how beaded sweater sets can be so many things at once: this one is cozy, sexy and elegant all at once. This one is from the 1940’s, but most sets are classic enough that you can make them look like they belong in whatever era is your favorite. With the exception of the Jackie O style ones in the 1960’s, it’s incredibly easy to change the look of sweater sets with hair and makeup styles. I’ve styled this for daywear here, but I’m on the hunt for a matching copper belt so I can wear it for more formal occasions too.

The beading on this is simple and elegant, which tends to be the type of sweater set that I gravitate towards. It was clearly also made or altered by someone with a really similar figure – the buttons are even placed and designed to avoid the dreaded button gaping that many curvy women experience. I usually have to add hidden snaps to sweater sets to prevent gaping, but this one worked perfectly with zero alterations.

I’m happy it’s finally cool enough to take these sweater sets out for a spin! If we go out for New Year’s Eve, I am planning on adding lots of gold accessories and making this my New Year’s Eve look. It’s sexy enough for a fun night out, but comfy enough to get through dinner and any potential cold weather.

What unusual vintage items do you have tucked away in your closet? What are you wearing for New Year’s Eve?

I love this sweater set! Such a great color. I love the gold beading with the brown. I adore vintage sweater sets but have yet to take the plunge on one. This post has convinced me that I have to give it a try some day!
