Under The Sea with Trashy Diva: 1940’s Dress in Deep Sea Coral Review

One of the things I love about living so close to Trashy Diva is getting to occasionally wear their gorgeous dresses on their website and blog! I have to start this review by admitting a bias: I own a ton of Trashy Diva and love the fit of almost all of their dresses. I debated heavily between picking up this 1940’s dress and the Lena Sarong in the same print, but this dress won out by a slim margin.

This print was a huge hit, so much that it sold out in the stores several days after it hit the shop floor. If your size isn’t available, don’t despair. I heard lots of ladies ordered multiple sizes to make sure they got one, so I suspect some sizes will start flooding back in due to returns pretty soon.

Part of the reason I picked this dress over the Lena Sarong is the fact that shockingly, I don’t own any of the 1940’s cut from Trashy Diva. I own several Lena Sarongs and love them. I’m lazy and have zero sewing skills, so I’ve always been scared away by the plunging neckline. In the interest of full disclosure, it’s pinned for decency in this photoshoot and I’ll either wear it pinned or add some stitches to tack it up a few inches. I’m wearing a 16 here for the extra room in the chest and the ribcage, although I would have fit the waist on the 14. Since the ribcage area does run pretty tight, I suggest sizing up if you’re between sizes or on the fence about which size you really are.

This dress is a perfectly authentic 1940’s style, which is right in my wheelhouse. While the print didn’t grab me when the early swatches were published, I fell in love with it. Trashy Diva occasionally makes prints that, to my eye, don’t pop until they’re on a person (like the Steel Magnolias) butย this print looks fabulous on everyone who I’ve seen in it. It reminds me of Shaheen print!

This dress works well with white, grey and navy if you need basic matches for accessories. The coral color is a very unique red – somewhere between a hot pink and a orange-red color. I don’t have the exact color to match it, so I’ll probably stick with white or navy to make things easy. In a pinch, you could even match it with a true red.

The design of this dress is perfect for curves. The lined waistband helps pull you into that classic hourglass shape and the ruching on the sleeves and bust area is supremely flattering. The rayon is a pretty authentic weight and perfect for our current 100 degree weather.

If you want to see how Trashy Diva styled several pieces from this collection, check out the full post on their blog here.

If you want to shop the full collection, you can find it here. Remember to look out for returns and restocks if your size isn’t available now!

Did you manage to snap up one of the Deep Sea Coral pieces already? What do you think of the print?ย

Man, How have I been missing all your posts lately! It’s because while I added you on facebook I forgot to add you to my reading list on my blog! Doh! Well, I have remedied that now! <3 Such a gorgeous dress on you Holly! I'm so happy with you went with the 40's! It's a great cut on you! I got this same dress in this same print and cut too! ๐Ÿ˜€ For me, this print was love at first sight! A dark background with a novelty print! Sold! Completely my favorite kind of print! Though Steel Magnolias (which was pretty much the opposite, light background with floral print) was also instant love for me ๐Ÿ˜‰
